An Acceptable Victim

*TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUAL VIOLENCE*
When discussing sexual violence, there are 'unacceptable' victims and 'acceptable' victims.
The pretty college student walking across a dark parking lot to her car was an 'unacceptable' victim--there is community outrage, candlelight marches, specially-trained nurses to hold her hand, support groups.
But the woman at the bar in the short skirt was, 'asking for it.' There is no support group or hand-holding for the ignorant, unwashed prostitute. These are the 'acceptable' victims. The ones we don't want to hear about, or care about, or care for.
Then there are the hidden victims.
Those who are never discussed.
Victims of sexual trafficking.
Or law enforcement/officer-involved domestic violence.
Or what this article addresses, male sexual violence:
'Stemple's findings on the failure of aid agencies is no surprise to Dolan. "The organisations working on sexual and gender-based violence don't talk about it," he says. "It's systematically silenced. If you're very, very lucky they'll give it a tangential mention at the end of a report. You might get five seconds of: 'Oh and men can also be the victims of sexual violence.' But there's no data, no discussion."'
It's time to start talking.
